Overview
StudyStriide ("we", "us", or "our") operates the StudyStriide iOS application. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how you can control it.

Data We Collect

Permissions
Microphone
Used only during active voice-tutor sessions. Audio is streamed to OpenAI's Realtime API to transcribe what you say and generate the tutor's replies. StudyStriide does not store your voice recordings; the text transcript of the conversation is saved with the session so you can review it.
Location (While Using the App) — optional
Location is optional and only requested with your permission ("While Using the App"). If you allow it, the app records precise GPS location: the place where a study session starts, the route you walk during the session (a point roughly every 10 metres), and the locations where you confirmed understanding a concept. These are stored with the session record so you can revisit where you learned something on a map (the memory-palace / method-of-loci features). We do not request "Always" location access, and location is only recorded while you are using the app. If you deny location access, the app works normally without these map features.
Motion & Fitness — optional
If you allow Motion & Fitness access, the app uses your iPhone's pedometer (Apple's Core Motion) during a study session to count steps and measure walking distance and time on foot. Raw motion data stays on your device; only each session's totals (steps, distance, and walking time) are saved with your stride. If you deny access, the app works normally without walk statistics.
Camera & Photo Library
Accessed only when you explicitly choose to add a photo to your Knowledge Bank. Images are uploaded to our servers for text extraction and are stored as part of your Knowledge Bank.
Speech Recognition
Used to transcribe your voice in real time during sessions. Transcription is processed on-device or by Apple's speech recognition service, and by OpenAI as part of voice sessions (see Third-Party Services).
Third-Party Services
- OpenAI (AI provider, United States) — powers Stride Buddy, our AI tutor. We send OpenAI the study material you upload (documents, PDFs, and photos of notes), your voice and its transcript during learning sessions, and the answers and messages you send to the tutor. This is shared only to generate your questions, feedback, and spoken responses, and is processed under OpenAI's API data policies and privacy policy. Under those policies, data sent through the API is not used to train OpenAI's models by default. The app asks for your consent before any of your data is sent to OpenAI.
- Supabase — authentication, database, and file storage. Your account credentials, Knowledge Bank files, and session history are stored on Supabase infrastructure.
- Fly.io — hosts our application servers (Stockholm, Sweden), which process your requests between the app, Supabase, and OpenAI.
- RevenueCat (subscription management, United States) — processes in-app subscriptions and purchases made through Apple. RevenueCat receives your StudyStriide account ID and your App Store purchase and subscription history (products, transaction dates, renewal and expiry status), and tells our servers which plan you are on. It does not receive your payment card details. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.
- PostHog (product analytics) — usage events from the app are sent to PostHog Cloud servers in the United States. Events are linked to your StudyStriide account ID and your sign-in method, but we do not include your email address, your name, or the content of your study material or conversations in analytics events. (Separately, our website, studystriide.com, uses PostHog Cloud in the EU for page analytics; if you join the waitlist there, the email address you enter is linked to those website analytics.)
- Google Sign-In / Sign in with Apple — optional single-sign-on. We receive only the email address and name you authorise.
- Apple — handles App Store payments, and on-device or server-side speech recognition when you use voice input.
Some of these providers process data in the United States and other countries outside your own.
Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account (Settings → Delete Account), all account data, Knowledge Bank files, and session history are permanently deleted within 30 days.
Anonymised analytics data (no user identifier) may be retained longer for aggregate product analysis.
Your Rights
You can:
- Access your data — contact us and we will provide a copy.
- Delete your account and all associated data — use Settings → Delete Account in the app, or contact us.
- Opt out of analytics — contact us to have your analytics identifier excluded.
- Revoke permissions — use iOS Settings to revoke microphone, speech recognition, location, motion & fitness, camera, or photo library access at any time.
If you are in the EEA or UK, you have additional rights under GDPR including the right to rectification, restriction of processing, and data portability.
Children
StudyStriide is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top. For significant changes we will notify you in-app.
